Merryfield Hall Concept Study

Oregon State University
Corvallis, Oregon

The College of Engineering at OSU wanted to explore a new vision for the east wing of Merryfield Hall that would house and highlight the work of the various student clubs such as Canoe Club and Steel Bridge Club.  These student groups need dedicated maker space on the OSU campus in which to bring their creations to life.  The College of Engineering coined the term “Student Innovation Space” for the space being studied in Merryfield Hall.  This space would be purpose built to accommodate welding, concrete mixing and pouring, woodworking, as well as project and materials storage.

Merryfield Hall was constructed in the early 1900s and was initially used as a blacksmith and machine shop.  Originally the space was lofty and vaulted with a clerestory bringing in natural light to the workspaces.  Over the years these features were covered up and lost as various uses cycled through the building.  This study looked to accommodate the Student Innovation Space with current updated services but also to restore the look and feel of Merryfield Hall’s original architecture.  By opening up the space and bringing natural daylight back to the work areas we hope to provide an extremely functional space for students to create within a historic piece of the OSU campus.
