CRYSTAL CREEK RESIDENTIAL CARE FACITIY
JAPSER MOUNTAIN
Jasper, Oregon
Jasper Mountain is a unique organization; it is a treatment facility that provides a place of hope for children and parents who are searching for answers. Set in the middle of the Jasper Mountain Campus, the new Crystal Creek Residential Care Facility is a 15-bed, two-story building for children. To allow for separation from the other structures on campus, the building was placed to fit along the edge of an oak savanna which had not been fully developed. The project was carefully nestled into the sloping hillside, facilitating parking and emergency vehicle access while minimizing the cutting of oak trees.
Inspired by a gemstone-like, crystalline design theme, the building is faceted with daylight and views brought in from many directions. The interiors are bright and airy, with open, vaulted ceilings and windows at many levels, providing views past the middle fork of the Willamette River to the foothills of the surrounding valley. Open to the floor below, the atrium space is lit by a series of south-facing windows at both the upper and lower floors in addition to north-facing, clerestory windows.
Resiliency features include a propane fuel generator combined with propane commercial cooking appliances. The hot water system includes solar pre-heat from roof-top panels. The building is designed to be low-maintenance so that JMC can focus on taking care of the children rather than the facility.
