Relocating the utility’s operations from the South Beach Operations Center, the Northern Operations Center is a 69,880-square-foot facility built on an 11-acre site outside the tsunami hazard zone, to the seismic standards (Category III-IV) of an essential facility. The project included renovation of an existing warehouse building, in addition to a new tilt-up concrete operations building and a new wood-framed wire/equipment storage shed.

The primary objective was to construct a facility that could be operational immediately after a major seismic event, in order to expedite the regional rebuilding efforts. Core concepts identified include resiliency, durability, low maintenance, common-sense sustainability, site and data security, and flexible, efficient use of space.
