TRACE WARD, AIA | LEED AP BD+C | PRINCIPAL
Trace Ward was the second of three generations of Wards who graduated from the University of Oregon Architecture School. Gary Ward graduated in the 60’s, Trace graduated in 1984, and Hannah graduated in 2018.
Trace started learning the craft of architecture and building by working for his architect father Gary in the 1970’s. After graduation from the UofO, Trace briefly worked for Eugene firm Arbor South before finding a position in 1988 with Martin, Schultz & Geyer. The first four years with George Schultz and Mike Geyer were formative in developing a respect for institutional architecture where the point is to balance value with craft, make spaces engaging and comfortable, and see that they are built to last for several decades. Throughout his career, Trace has been fortunate to be around people who have an attention for detail.
For over 30 years, Trace has been with GLAS Architects. He started as a Project Architect, working on school additions and renovations for several school districts in the Willamette valley region. He rose to the level of Project Manager, and Associate, until becoming one of the Principals of GLAS in 2007. Common sense sustainability has been an interest for Trace for a long time. Getting a better building envelope has often been the most cost effective way to maximize client investment over the long term. Trace became LEED Accredited in 2011, and is currently working on becoming Passive House certified.
When he’s not working, Trace enjoys running on the paths along the river especially if the run is timed for a view of the sunrise. He also finds time to work on projects in the house and garage. The work in the yard doesn’t always seem like it, but the focus has been to widen the window of flowering and fragrance as far across the year as possible.
